The Centurion Ri series boats are considered to be the best surf boats in the world and we’re going to talk about how they perform, what they do, and what you can expect when you get behind one.
Today, we are going to focus on the Ri245. This model is the middle of the Ri series– there’s a smaller version (Ri230) and a larger version (Ri265). One thing that is important to note when we’re talking about the Ri series boats from Centurion, is that they all have very similar surf waves. The only difference between each of these models is that the Ri265 surf wave is just a couple of feet longer than the Ri245, and the Ri230 surf wave is just a couple of feet shorter than the Ri245. The size, the mass, the displacement, and the push that these waves provide are all going to be virtually identical. The reason for this [...]
Probably the most over-hyped, marketed and discussed item on a wakesurf boat is the Surf System. “My surf system is better than yours” seems to be a topic that is screamed from every proverbial roof in the wake boat industry and there is A LOT of bad information out there about these devices that allow you to move water from side to side to create a surf wave.
The plates/tabs/gates that sit at the back end of a boat are great for creating delayed convergence, but there is a lot more that goes into creating a surf wave than just the device that diverts water flow at the back of a boat. The biggest factors that are involved in what really makes a “Surf System”, are as follows:
-The plates/gates/tabs that direct water flow at the back of the boat -The hull design, or better put, running surface of the boat -The ballast [...]
Comments Off on Ballast Placement for Wakesurfing – How Centurion Does it Different
The topic of how much ballast a boat has is a very common one, and for a good reason since there is no replacement for displacement when it comes to wakesurfing. Less common, however, is a discussion about where that ballast is located and how that impacts the surf wave a boat will put out and the way it will drive. So let’s take a minute and unpack this and talk about ballast placement.
Many people assume that the way a particular boat manufacturer places ballast in a boat is what is optimal for creating a surf wave on that particular boat, however, if you do some digging you will quickly find that this isn’t necessarily the case. Many users are adding ballast to the bow or rear of boats to increase their performance and improve the surf wave. Adding this weight to increase the size of the wave is one thing, but many users [...]

Is there really such thing as a boat that can wakeboard, surf, AND ski? Many people are skeptical that one boat can simply do it all. If you look at the boats designed for skiing, they have a drastically different running surface than the boats designed for wakesurfing.
How can you make a boat that’s fun to ski behind and surf behind? There are two ways that boat manufacturers are making boats that can both ski and surf well.
Put a surf system and ballast on a boat with a flat hull
Put a surf system, ballast and XL trim plate on a boat with a [...]

Comments Off on Centurion vs. Malibu – Ballast Systems
Recently we had the opportunity to run some tests and shoot some video with a Malibu MXZ that we took on trade and see how it compared against boats in our Centurion lineup. In this video we test the ballast fill times for the Centurion Ri237 and the Malibu 24MXZ and see how they compare as well as give details on the ballast systems.
Here are the ballast fill times for adding 3,000 lbs. into the boats: Centurion Ri237 – 54 seconds Malibu 24MXZ – 10 Minutes 20 seconds
In the video you may notice that while Jack is out surfing behind the Ri237 that the video is clipped and looped. After we shot the video and came back to sync up the footage on the two cameras we noticed that Jack finished surfing earlier than we had expected and there was a big gap between when they finished surfing and when the [...]
Comments Off on Centurion vs Malibu – Fuel Consumption 2
This video is a follow up to the video that we made comparing a Malibu MXZ and a Nautique G23 to a Centurion Ri257 looking at fuel economy and power. If you would like to check them out you can see each of them here:
There were a number of people that were concerned that the information wasn’t valid because the Malibu MXZ we used in the video was a 2016 model and the 2017 model changed both the hull and the drivetrain of the boat. As you can imagine, getting current model boats to do this kind of testing is difficult, REALLY difficult. We made the offer to run our fuel flow rate Diacom test on any manufacturer’s current model year towboat, but had no takers.
Well, it didn’t take long for us to take a 2017 Malibu 24 MXZ in on trade for a new Centurion. Of course, we couldn’t miss [...]
Comments Off on Surf / Ski / Wakeboard – One Boat – 5 Minutes!
In this post we have a video that we shot doing something we have never seen done before. We are showing you the surf wave, wakeboard wake and ski wake behind the same boat – all in one take; completely unedited, untouched and shot on an iPhone7. This hopefully shows you the performance of the new Opti-V hull as well as the speed and versatility of the Ramfill ballast system.
When showcasing the “crossover” performance of other wake boats you typically see something like this: -The ski wake with one driver, no passenger, and no ballast. Typically these are shots of the skier outside the wake and never showing the skier going through the wakes. -A different set of shots of the wakeboard wake with 8 passengers, full ballast and a pro rider with camera angles designed to make it look bigger and cleaner. -Another set of shots of the surf wave [...]
