Today, we are going to focus on the Ri245. This model is the middle of the Ri series– there’s a smaller version (Ri230) and a larger version (Ri265). One thing that is important to note when we’re talking about the Ri series boats from Centurion, is that they all have very similar surf waves. There were a number of people that were concerned that the information wasn’t valid because the Malibu MXZ we used in the video was a 2016 model and the 2017 model changed both the hull and the drivetrain of the boat. As you can imagine, getting current model boats to do this kind of testing is difficult, REALLY difficult. We made the offer to run our fuel flow rate Diacom test on any manufacturer’s current model year towboat, but had no takers.

If you’ve spent much time looking on our website or poking around online you’ve probably come across some pretty unbelievable information about the new Centurion Opti-V Hull. We made this video because the claims about the Opti-V hull are exactly that – almost “Unbelievable”.
I mean, come on… 50% better fuel efficiency? A better wakeboard wake than the best wakeboard boats on the market? Faster acceleration than a flat bottom boat?
Yes, and this is where we prove it.

In this post we have a video that we shot doing something we have never seen done before. We are showing you the surf wave, wakeboard wake and ski wake behind the same boat – all in one take; completely unedited, untouched and shot on an iPhone7. This hopefully shows you the performance of the new Opti-V hull as well as the speed and versatility of the Ramfill ballast system.

On June 24-26 we had the opportunity to participate at the Utah Wake Surf Fest. This is a fantastic event that allows people to surf on and review surf boats and waves from nearly every boat manufacturer. The best part for anyone reading this is that the results of the event, including detailed scoring of every aspect of the boats tested, is published for everyone to see. In this article we are going to break down the reviews for each boat and take a closer look at what people thought about each of the boats.

With so many options to choose from, a lot of people are left asking, “Is one better than another?” In this post we want to talk about the systems, what makes them different, and to try to cut through the marketing rabble to take a serious look at how they compare. You know those yellow stickers on the boats that say something like “16 Persons or 2350 lbs?” One of the most common questions we get is, “Is ballast factored into those numbers?” or, in other words, “How many people is the boat rated for when the ballast is FULL?” This is an important question – probably more so than you might expect.
First, let’s talk about those ratings and where they come from – bear with me, this will all come together here soon. Most people think that those ratings are established by the Coast Guard,; however once a boat goes over 19 feet, the Coast Guard no longer gives specific ratings for capacity. The capacity ratings are, in most cases, established by a body referred to as the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). Over the past several years I frequently hear the comment from potential boat buyers, “My family and I want a boat mostly to wakesurf behind, but we are not professionals so we don’t need a pro surf wave.” Well, I can say, from personal experience teaching hundreds of people to surf, that this idea is a misconception. I do agree that for a beginner to intermediate level wakeboarder’s perspective (90+ Percent of people), a professional level wakeboard wake is too big, very intimidating and limits progression. However, for a beginner to intermediate level wakesurfer’s perspective, a “professional-level” surf wave leads to much easier and overall much better experience. With the right wave progression is much faster, and easier. In fact if you weigh over 190 lbs. learning to really surf (throw in the rope and ride) is just about impossible without a good quality surf wave .

We are often asked why Centurion boats create such awesome surf waves. There are multiple factors that combine together to make a world class surf wave, one of which is experience. Centurion created its first surf boat hull way back in the 1990’s, way before surfing was the cool thing. Additionally, there are things like CATS, Quicksurf and trim tab shapes that allow for wake customization and tweaking. But the most important factor, by far, is displacement. There is no replacement for displacement.
What do I mean by this? Well, it’s simple; physics really does matter. There are natural laws that apply to wave/wake size and shape. The wave or wake of your boat (what you surf on) is created by your boat displacing water.
